My Wedding in Mumbai

with Mr. and Mrs. Singh

The reason I'm putting this page on the web, besides showing off our wedding, is to record what was required for an international (particularly India - Japan) marriage.  During my short stay in Mumbai we had to get married, get our U.S. visa (as I live and work in the U.S.), and report our marriage to Japan. I hope this will be of some use to people who may have to go through similar procedures.

Meena and I got married at a court in Mumbai, India, on January 22nd, 2003.

Me   Meena

Caution: The below is by no means a typical wedding schedule in India. Because I could get only two weeks vacation from my work, we used a marriage agent and a passport agent, whom we only indirectly know. If you don't have connections and don't want to waste your money on hiring agents, you would need at least 2-3 weeks, plus one month waiting period after the notice of marriage if you do a court marriage.

A brief diary:

1/20 (Mon.) Ordered wedding rings.

1/21 (Tue.) Bought kurtas, mangal sutra (we did not use these in the court marriage. We just went to a temple afterwards).

1/22 (Wed.) Meena's makeup, picked up the photographer, COURT MARRIAGE, reception at Ocean restaurant (Indian), went to Japanese consulate to make an appointment and bring Meena's old passport.

1/23 (Thu.) Passport name change application, picked up invitation cards (just as an evidence of marriage).

1/24-26 Rest and sightseeing !

1/27 (Mon.) Picked up Meena's passport with a new name, got my Ph.D. diploma faxed (I forgat to bring it!).

1/28 (Tue.) Collected marriage certificate receipt (which was unnecessary).

1/29 (Wed.) VISA INTERVIEW AT THE US CONSULATE.

1/30 (Thu.) MARRIAGE REGISTRATION TO JAPANESE CONSULATE

1/31-2/3 Packing, sightseeing and visiting people.

2/4 (Wed.) 6am flight back to the US.
